Because it has been built up from pyroclastic flows into a porous yet solid rock. Our heavy-duty MAGOXID-COAT® coatings, which enable the absorption of lubricants such as PTFE, are also rich in pores.

The process

MAGOXID-COAT® is a plasma chemical coating for the finishing of magnesium alloys. The coating process is operated in our plant in Berlin, the centre of excellence for plasma chemical processes.

Coating with MAGOXID-COAT® takes place in an electrolyte of saline solution. Here, the workpiece is connected as an anode, in series, with an external power source. In the process of anodisation, oxygen plasma discharges at the workpiece surface, melts the surface area briefly and first forms a very thin barrier layer which firmly bonds to the outer metal layer. This is followed by a low-pore and a pore-rich oxide ceramic layer. The colour of the layers is usually white-grey. However, black layers can also be produced.

  • Characteristics

    The MAGOXID-COAT® composite coating protects magnesium alloys from wear and corrosion and, thanks to its surface structure, enables the incorporation of lubricants as well as subsequent workpiece treatments such as painting or impregnation.

    The plasma chemical process leads to crystalline oxide ceramic layers which, in addition to high wear and corrosion protection, meet other requirements such as hardness, contour accuracy, bending fatigue strength, dimensional stability or temperature resistance.

  • Base Materials

    All common magnesium alloys such as AZ31, AZ61, AZ81, AZ91, AM20, AM50, AM60 and alloys containing rare earths and zirconium e.g. ZE41 and WE43 can be coated with the MAGOXID-COAT® process.

  • Field of Application

    Magnesium is the lightest metal in the field of construction materials. MAGOXID-COAT® optimally combines the versatility of magnesium materials with a broad spectrum of coating properties. Thus, the coating allows the use of treated magnesium products in a variety of sectors.

    Magnesium components are coated with MAGOXID-COAT® white to protect them from wear and corrosion. MAGOXID-COAT® white can also be subsequently painted (including wheels for sports cars, bicycles and wheelchairs).

    Due to their high light absorption capacity, black MAGOXID-COAT® coatings are suitable for optical parts, fine threads or heating radiators, for example.

    Among the customer industries of MAGOXID-COAT® finished components are: automotive engineering, instrument manufacturing, office technology, data processing, power engineering, household appliance industry, communications technology, food industry, aerospace, optical industry.
