Because it has been built up from pyroclastic flows into porous yet solid rock. Our high resilience KEPLA-COAT® coatings are also highly porous, enabling the inclusion of lubricants such as PTFE.

The process

KEPLA-COAT® is a plasma chemical coating for the finishing of aluminium and titanium alloys. In the case of titanium alloys, the process was formerly called Plasmocer®.

The coating process is operated in our plant in Berlin, the centre of excellence for plasma chemical processes.

Coating with KEPLA-COAT® takes place in an electrolyte of saline solution. Here, the workpiece is connected to an external power source as an anode. In the process of anodisation, oxygen plasma discharges onto the workpiece surface, melting it for a short time and first forms an extremely thin barrier layer, which firmly bonds to the outer metal layer. This is followed by a low-pore and then a high-pore oxide ceramic layer. The colour of the layers is usually grey-white. However, black layers can also be produced.

  • Characteristics

    The KEPLA-COAT® layer bond protects aluminium and titanium from wear and corrosion and, thanks to its surface structure, enables the incorporation of lubricants as well as subsequent workpiece treatments such as painting or impregnations.

    In addition to excellent wear protection, KEPLA-COAT® offers absolute contour accuracy and dimensional stability as well as hardness. KEPLA-COAT® coated substrates exhibit a much higher fatigue strength than substrates with comparable coatings. The layers resist aggressive gases such as chlorine and boron trichloride. In addition, KEPLA-COAT® guarantees very good anti-friction properties, especially in combination with PTFE or other dry lubricants.

  • Base Materials

    KEPLA-COAT® is suitable for almost all technically interesting aluminium alloys, whether wrought alloys, cast alloys or die-cast alloys. Similarly, titanium materials can be coated. We are happy to advise you on alloy selection.

    White layers on titanium materials are currently not produced. Please contact us regarding project management possibilities for this..

  • Field of Application

    Aluminium components coated with KEPLA-COAT® are used in many different ways: for example, as geometrically complex rotors in turbo-molecular pumps. Here, the crack and pore-free coating of the workpiece, on the one hand, prevents the penetration of reactive gases and thus gives the necessary protection against plasma etching processes, whilst on the other hand, it withstands the mechanical load of extremely high speeds. KEPLA-COAT® coated aluminium materials are also found in other applications such as sealing rings, fixing discs, rollers, drums or cylinder tubes.

    Due to their high light absorption capacity, black KEPLA-COAT® coatings are suitable, for example, for optical parts, finely threaded parts or heating radiators.

    The customer industries of KEPLA-COAT® finished components include: automotive, data processing, electronics, power technology, communications technology, food industry, aerospace, optical industry, mechanical engineering, medical device manufacturing, vacuum technology.
